Barbados: New Republic Nation

BARBADOS NEW REPUBLIC NATION

Barbados emerged as a New Republic Nation on the 30th November 2021. Barbados new era begins during its 55th Independence celebration in Barbados.

Barbados is an island country in the Caribbean region. Barbados has officially removed Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State and appointed Dame Sandra prunella Mason 72years as 1st President of Barbados. Barbados still continues to be the 54th commonwealth Nation. 

Official change of Status


The British Royal Flag has been taken down and replaced for the official change of Status. The National flag, National pledge, National anthem, Coat of arms remains unchanged in the Nation. By announcing as a new Republic Nation Barbados has dropped the terms like “Royal, Crown” and replaced them by “Barbados and state”.


The Independent Day celebrations have been held in the Bridgetown capital city of Barbados. The chief guest of honor is Prince Charles. In his speech to the citizens of Barbados, he said “ Appalling atrocity of slavery” A new era has begun where the  Transatlantic Slave Trade has been ended where the Island has suffered for more than 200 years in Britain’s influence. 

Pince charles received Order of Freedom Of Barbados award

Prince Charles has been awarded the prestigious “Order of Freedom of Barbados” by the new President Dame Sandra. Queen Elizabeth has sent a message for the citizens of the country “Warmest good wishes for happiness, peace, and prosperity in the future” and the Nation holds a Special place in her heart.

Pre-Independence

1640: The Sugar Revolution has changed the economy of Barbados. As it emerged as one of the largest sugar Industries. Dutch traders have supplied equipment, enslaved Africans, and in return exported the sugar to Europe.

1816: Bussa’s Rebellion, the harsh conditions of slaves resulted in slave rebellions, which was suppressed by British troops

1833: The Slaved rebellion leads to the abolition of the British Empire in Barbados

 1938: Barbados started demoing for better working conditions, legalization of trade unions, as a result, Moyne Commission has been sent to Barbados by the British

Post Independence

1966: Democratic Labour party set up by Errol Barrow has become the country’s first Prime Minister and gained full independence on 30 November 1966.

1979: Cox commission has been set up for the republic system of the Nation.

1989: Errol Barrow Day is recognized as the father of the Nation since 21 January 1989.

1998: republic status has to be adopted by Barbados has been recommended by the constitutional committee.

2016: Freundel Stuart prime minister of Barbados said that “it was time to move from a monarchical system to a republican form of government”.

2020: Dame Sandra was appointed as a Governor-General of Barbados, in her speech she said “Barbadians want a Barbadian head of state”.

September 2021: Constitution Amendment Bill 2021 has been introduced in Parliament and passed on 6 October.

November 2021: Barbados becomes a republic Nation on 30 November 2021

The economy mostly relies on the sugar cane industry, cultivation of tobacco, cotton, indigo is the main agricultural form. Since 1970 tourism sector has developed in the country.

Rihanna appointed as Barbadian National Hero

Popstar and Barbadian Singer Robyn Rihanna has been named as National Hero at the ceremony. In 2009 she was appointed as an honorary Ambassador of Youth and Culture for Barbados. In 2018 she was appointed as Ambassador of Barbados.
